Wild Dutchman

Wild Dutchman is a sunflower seed brand born on a South Dakota farm. Before launching the brand, the founders were already growing and roasting seeds for themselves. Their seeds are known for a big crunch and subtle sweetness, with flavors like Flamin’ Bacon, Cheddar Dill, and Spicy Cheeseburger. Wild Dutchman is committed to natural ingredients and farm-to-table quality.

Seed Snacking, Upgraded

Wild Dutchman elevates sunflower seeds to gourmet status with bold flavors like Flamin’ Bacon, Cheddar Dill, and Spicy Cheeseburger. Grown and roasted in small batches in South Dakota, their seeds are mouth-friendly and mess-free—perfect for road trips, ball games, and snack attacks.

Wayne Vanderlaan

Wild Dutchman began with Wayne Vanderlaan, a Midwestern farmer who, along with his son Toby, crafted sunflower seeds to keep them alert on long road trips. Their recipe — perfectly balanced with just a hint of sweetness and not too salty — quickly became a favorite among friends and family, sparking the creation of the Wild Dutchman brand.

The name “Wild Dutchman” comes from Wayne’s nickname, a tradition common among Midwest farmers. While a neighbor was known as “The Crazy Norwegian,” Wayne was proudly called “The Wild Dutchman.” This heritage lives on today in every bag of seeds.

Toby and his daughter Shelby have grown the brand over the years, partnering in 2024 with Southern Sun and longtime collaborators Greg Bich, a farmer, and Danny Dale, a sunflower seed processor. Together, their families continue to produce Wild Dutchman’s seeds in Huron, South Dakota — a community where Greg and Danny are actively involved, serving on school boards, church councils, and even as volunteer firefighters.

The brand’s signature bold orange packaging honors their Dutch roots and serves as a tribute to Wayne. Every time you enjoy Wild Dutchman sunflower seeds, you’re tasting a piece of Midwestern tradition and family pride.
