Zambezi Biltong was founded by Mwila Kapungulya, Ranga Chinongoza, and Henry Muchineripi, who are immigrants from Southern Africa living in Minnesota. They started the company to share the traditional African dried meat snack, biltong, with their new home. The founders grew up eating biltong in their home countries and noticed it was difficult to find in the U.S. that compared to what they had back home.

The Zambezi River, which flows through their native countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe, is the inspiration for the company’s name. The biltong is made using methods and recipes passed down through generations, and the company emphasizes its authenticity. The founders initially sold their biltong at local farmers’ markets and festivals in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota before expanding to online sales. Their goal is to share a piece of their Southern African culture with the U.S. by offering a healthy, high-protein, zero-sugar meat snack.
