40 Acre Foods began with a homemade Bloody Mary spice blend that Gary and his wife perfected at their cabin. In 2020, they turned their hobby into a business, launching 1788 Spice. Their handcrafted seasonings are gluten-free, MSG-free, and made without additives. They serve both retail customers and local bars/restaurants across WI and MN.

Meet the Maker
Gary Jessen
My wife and I used to enjoy making Bloody Marys for ourselves and guests at our cabin. Instead of bringing multiple bottles of seasoning, we would batch it at home to take with us. After a few hit-and-miss trials, we finally nailed down a recipe we liked. We’d bottle and batch the seasoning for friends, take it with us on trips, and loved gifting it. Years went by, and our little recipe became a bigger idea. We decided to officially bottle and sell 1788, the year we both retired, and have loved doing it since.
